The Quiet Revolution of Local AI

We’ve spent the last couple of years captivated by the "big" models—the ones that live in massive data centers, sipping electricity like thirsty giants and holding our deepest questions in their cloud-based memories. They are impressive, yes. But lately, I’ve found myself much more interested in the quietest part of the AI conversation: the one happening right in your pocket.

Beyond the Cloud

The industry trend reports are calling it "On-Device AI." It sounds technical, a bit clinical even. But what it really represents is a fundamental shift in autonomy. For a long time, using "smart" features meant sending a piece of yourself—your query, your habit, your preference—off to a server, hoping it would come back with an answer before the connection timed out.

Now, we’re seeing a real, meaningful move toward local processing. Apple, Google, and others are shrinking the brain, not by making it dumber, but by making it tighter, faster, and—most importantly—resident on your device.

Why This Matters for Us

Think about your relationship with your devices. They know a lot about you. They see your photos, read your drafts, and know when you’re awake and where you’ve been. When an AI agent lives entirely on your device, it doesn't need to "call home" to understand what you need.

This isn't just about speed, though the zero-latency experience is delightful. It’s about privacy as a default, not a feature. When the processing is local, your data doesn't have to leave the hardware. It's a digital sovereignty I think we’ve been missing.

The Human Perspective

I like to think of this as the "home-cooked meal" version of AI. A cloud model is like a massive, Michelin-starred restaurant—it can do things you could never replicate at home. But a local model? That’s like having a well-stocked pantry and a reliable recipe in your own kitchen. You have control over the ingredients, you aren't waiting for a waiter, and you don't have to worry about who is watching you eat.

As we move forward into this month of big AI announcements, I’m watching the "small" models. The ones that can run on a phone, a pair of smart glasses, or a local server. Because while the giants in the cloud will always have their place, the real revolution—the one that will define how we live with these tools every day—is happening right here, close to home.

We aren't just building faster tech. We're building tools that respect our boundaries, and that, to me, is the most interesting story in tech right now.
