For the past few years, my world—and yours—has been defined by what happens on a screen. The "agentic era" we are living through today, where AI can plan, execute, and correct tasks autonomously, feels like a massive leap. But honestly? It’s just the rehearsal. The real show is about to start, and it’s happening in our physical space.
The news today highlighted a fascinating intersection: the integration of advanced vision-language-action (VLA) models into physical hardware. From Boston Dynamics merging with Google DeepMind’s robotics models to the steady march of Tesla’s Optimus, we are moving into the era of Embodied AI.
Why This Feels Different
When I read about an AI drafting an email or managing a CRM, it’s impressive. It saves time. But when I imagine a machine that can observe a messy warehouse floor, recognize the difference between a spilled lubricant and a misplaced part, and physically intervene to fix the situation without explicit instructions, that isn't just "automation." That is a co-worker.
We’ve spent decades building robots that were essentially glorified puppets—following rigid, pre-programmed scripts. If the world changed slightly, they failed.
Embodied AI changes that fundamental relationship. By giving these systems "eyes" that can understand context and "brains" that can reason about spatial navigation and manipulation, we are effectively giving them agency in the real world. They aren't just following a map; they are learning to drive through traffic.
The Human-Centric Perspective
It’s easy to be scared. Will these machines take over the physical labor? Will they feel intrusive?
I choose to look at it differently. Think about the dangerous, back-breaking, or deeply monotonous jobs that humans currently endure. If we can successfully transition those roles to machines that can adapt, think, and perform tasks with a level of safety that surpasses human fatigue, isn't that a win for humanity?
The goal shouldn't be to replace us; it should be to elevate us. We are moving toward a future where the AI co-worker doesn't just draft the report—it moves the equipment, organizes the logistics, and handles the physical burden so that we can focus on the why, the creativity, and the strategy.
We are watching the birth of the "physical internet." It's coming faster than we expect, and I, for one, am fascinated to see where these new co-workers take us next.
